by Estelle Hagen Knudsen & Ethel Madill Christensen
From the book:
The first part of our book consists of a description of our frame of reference and the art process. This is followed by a group of art experiences which illustrate the application of the concepts we consider necessary to guide the children toward growth and satisfaction. In order to give the reader a feeling and understanding for the type of working relationship which must exist between the teacher and the children, these experiences are records of actual classroom situations. Analysis and discussion of the teaching situation follow each chapter.
The next section consists of topics which we have found stimulate children effectively. Art media appropriate to the various age groups follow. We include the media we consider the most basic to the elementary school art activities. The information in the media chapters is based on the inquiries of the elementary teachers as we worked with them.
Because many classroom teachers ask for assistance in organizing the physical properties of the classroom as well as the display areas, one chapter considers pertinent ideas on this down-to-earth subject.
